The Beasts Pirates are a notorious and powerful pirate crew in the One Piece series, but what makes them so special?
The infamous Beasts Pirates are a more than formidable force operating in the dangerous New World of the Grand Line. The crew’s unique characteristics, hierarchy, and ambitions make them central to the series’ overarching narrative. It was fun to see them so active in the Wano Country Arc, so it’s only natural that we discuss who the Beasts Pirates are. From leadership to main conflicts, it’s time to dissect the story of one of One Piece’s most terrifying pirate crews.
Who Leads The Beasts Pirates?
At the head of the Beasts Pirates is Kaido, a monstrous figure with a love for chaos. We had a lot of fun discussing this character in another segment. He is essentially the embodiment of a villain’s relentless pursuit of becoming the ultimate power in the world of One Piece. Kaido’s ambition to create a crew of “gifted” individuals and a his desire to establish the New Onigashima. He desires this outcome so much that he is willing to essentially mutate hundreds (if not thousands) of innocent lives. Like many, his mission revolves around the villainous theme of ultimate supremacy by creating a grotesque, synthetically tuned army.
Kaido’s inner circle includes his three top subordinates, known as the All-Stars. These high-ranking members are among the most formidable pirates in the crew and possess significant authority. The All-Stars – or King, Queen, and Jack – are responsible for overseeing various divisions of the crew and executing Kaido’s orders. Other notable officers include the “Tobiroppo” or “Shinuchi”.
Beasts Pirates Powers and Special Abilities
For those caught up in the series, the Beasts Pirates are clearly known for their diverse and formidable abilities. Kaido’s personal strength is further bolstered by his Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit, allowing him to transform into a massive Eastern-style dragon at will. This admittedly epic ability grants him immense physical power, durability, and flight. Plus, it makes him a nearly invulnerable adversary. As we have stated in previous segments, Kaidou will even go as far as attempting life-ending stunts to strengthen himself.
As previously stated, All-Stars showcase their strength with their individual powers, Haki mastery, and combat prowess. These elite members possess distinct Zoan-type Devil Fruits, enabling them to transform into powerful creatures. For instance, Jack possesses the Mammoth Fruit, and Queen has the Brachiosaurus Fruit, granting them exceptional physical attributes and unique abilities. This is a terrifying addition to their already stellar array of fighting techniques showcased throughout the anime and manga.
Wano Country: A Beast-Run Dictatorship
The Beasts Pirates are based on the island of Wano Country, specifically in the region of Onigashima. Kaido’s plan to turn Wano into a pirate utopia reflects the crew’s broader goals. They have established a strong presence on the island, holding it under their control and exerting dominance over the citizens. Their influence extends to controlling essential resources and oppressing the Wano residents. One of the pirates, who we have addressed in other entries, is Black Maria. Much of the crew’s ability to suppress the populace is exhibited through her ability to create a web of surveillance (pun intended).
The Ultimate Goal
The Beasts Pirates’ primary objective is to achieve Kaido’s vision of the “New Onigashima.” This involves transforming the isolated Wano Country into a lawless paradise where pirates reign supreme. Think of the movie Purge, but it never ends with beasts running around wreaking havoc. It’s reminiscent of something you’d see in Dante’s circles in Hell. They seek to monopolize the nation’s resources, exploit its citizens, and turn it into a haven for criminals and chaos.
Kaido’s broader aspiration is to create the “strongest crew” by recruiting powerful and gifted individuals who can withstand pain and conquer adversity. At his peak, he aims to gather an unstoppable army. And, along with his fellow Yonko, challenges the world’s established powers, including the World Government and the Marines. This, for those who are caught up, is mercilessly thwarted, but it makes sense to briefly summarize the events.
Conflicts and Failures: What Happens in The Wano Country Arc?
The Beasts Pirates play a central role in the series’ narrative arcs. They are the primary antagonists during the Wano Country arc, which focuses on the Straw Hat Pirates’ efforts to liberate Wano from the oppressive rule of Kaido and Orochi, the Shogun. The conflict escalates as the Straw Hat Pirates form alliances with various samurai, minks, and pirates to take down the Beasts Pirates and restore Wano’s sovereignty. There are casualties on both sides. Several fateful duels take place, and Robin ends up snapping Black Maria like a packaged meat stick on a weekend field trip.
The Legacy of The Beasts Pirates
Throughout the series, the Beasts Pirates are highlighted as one of the most significant pirate crews, known for their brutality and audacity. Their actions and interactions with other pirate crews, the Revolutionary Army, the Marines, and other factions contribute to the complexity of the One Piece world.
With all this on the table, the Beasts Pirates are (more accurately were) a fearsome and influential pirate crew led by the imposing figure of Kaido. With a hierarchy consisting of the fabled All-Stars and various powerful divisions, they wield considerable power and control over the territory of Wano Country in the eventful arc. Although the Beasts Pirates don’t achieve the desired outcome, their role left ripples in the ongoing narrative.
